mise generate install-script

Generate a script that downloads and runs a pinned mise

Commit the script, for example as bin/mise, so contributors and CI can run ./bin/mise install without installing mise first. On first run it downloads the pinned mise version into the mise data directory, or into the project with --localize, then runs it with the arguments it was given.

mise generate bootstrap is a deprecated alias for this command and will be removed in mise 2027.9.0.

Flags

  • -l --localize — Keep mise data and cache in a project-local directory (.mise by default)

Use --localized-dir to choose its location. This isolates mise state; it is not an OS sandbox for commands the generated script runs.

  • -V --version <VERSION> — mise version to pin; defaults to the release mise self-update would install

  • -w --write [PATH] — Write the script to PATH (./bin/mise when no path is given) and make it executable, instead of printing it

  • --localized-dir <DIR> — Directory for mise data when using --localize, relative to the project

    Default: .mise

  • --windows — Also write a Windows launcher, <PATH>.cmd

Windows cannot run the bash script. Generate the launcher on any OS and commit it for contributors on Windows. Requires --write.

  • -h --help — Print help

Examples

Write ./bin/mise; on first run it downloads the pinned mise, then runs it

mise generate install-script --write ./bin/mise

Keep mise and its tools in .mise inside the project

mise generate install-script --localize --write ./bin/mise

Also write bin/mise.cmd for contributors on Windows

mise generate install-script --write ./bin/mise --windows
